Self Branding and Men’s Fashion

What is Branding?

Many people confuse a brand with a brand-name or logo. Brands are concepts and promises that a company makes to its intended audience, manifested in brand signals like the company’s respective culture, product, service, employees, design, etc.

Brand-names and logos are two of these many signals that articulate the brand.

Apple, for example, bears the brand-name Apple, and its logo is an Apple.

The Apple brand, however, is based on bringing simplicity and creativity into technology.

When people speak about how much they love the Apple brand, they aren’t talking about the Apple logo, they are talking about how Apple as a company makes them feel.

How Do You Brand Yourself?

It may make you feel uncomfortable, but you’re a brand too.

We like to think of ourselves as dynamic and multi-dimensional, but in other people’s heads, we’re simplified into the human equivalent of a logo.

It extends beyond your career into your personal life and environment. Reliable, funny, alcoholic – there are a number of ways people can perceive you.

Once we’ve accepted that we’re being stereotyped, it’s time to take control of the stereotype and use it to our advantage.

Step One: Decide Who You Are

The title of this section could just as easily be, “Figure Out Who You Are.”

You can’t just magically decide you want to be charming, good-looking, and the life of the party. Your brand identity needs to be based on your real identity and what appeals to you.

Branding only works if there are strong roots of truth associated with the concept.

Take some time to self-reflect and figure out what you’re already like as a person, and how other people perceive you. Ask your friends and family for honest opinions.

Step Two: Put it All Together

Write up everything you’ve compiled into a list and see what comes up consistently. Now start to edit.

Pick the adjectives and attributes that you’ve discovered, and also like about you, and put them on a new list.

Congratulations, you’re starting to get a focused idea of who you want to be. Feel free to add elements to the mix that you’d like to incorporate into your personality, but be honest with yourself and only add things that you can truly achieve and portray.

This really isn’t all as cold and conceited as it sounds; it’s merely a matter of understanding who you are in the world, and then taking control of who you might want to be instead.

Step Three: Dress the Part

Unfortunately, you are going to have to stereotype yourself. At home, you can be all that you wear ratty pajamas one day and a silk robe the next, but when it comes to what you put out to the world to see, it should be clear consistent message.

There are many different ways to dress well. Not every man belongs in a suit.

Now that you’ve got a better idea of who you are, look for visual cues in other men that send a similar message to the one you want to. Look for stylistic consistencies in your workplace or industry, then put your own spin on them with the information you’ve gathered about yourself.

If you work in a corporate environment but you’re flamboyant, maybe you wear bright colored ties to work every day. If you’re workplace garb is more relaxed, maybe you ditch the hard-bottoms for stylish sneakers.

Whatever you decide, just make sure it’s consistent and reflective of the self-image you want to present.
