Long rumored to be in the works, Amazon finally gives credence to the speculators by announcing the official unveiling of their entry into the smartphone market: the Fire. Featuring a rubberized exterior, machined aluminum buttons and a 4.7″ Gorilla Glass display with HD capability, there’s no question as to who this phone is meant to rattle. The phones power plant is a quad-core 2.2GHz processor and Adreno 330 GPU with 2GB of RAM. Of course, it wouldn’t be a phone without a camera, so expect a front-facing 2.1-megapixel camera along with a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera equipped with a f/2.0 lens (and unlimited cloud storage for all the photos you snap). Users will also have access to Amazon Prime offerings like Music and Video while Audible, Kindle Newsstand and Comixology also come as part of a robust media package.
In what might be the most ‘Big Brother’ move we’ve seen on a smartphone, the Fire features Firefly: a feature that uses the phone’s camera and microphone to recognize all kinds of media, from books and DVDs to video games, and allows users to purchase them at Amazon.com.
Global LTE, quad-band GSM, five bands of UMTS, 802.11ac support, WiFi channel bonding, NFC, and Bluetooth mean that connectivity should be no issue. The Fire can be per-ordered online now starting at $199 USD elusively on AT&T starting July 25.
