How to Dress in Layers

One in five guys thinks that layering is a special step in creating a chip dip. OK, we clearly made up that statistic, but you’d be just as surprised as we are to discover that most men think layering goes so far as throwing a scarf on top of a pea coat.

Gentlemen, we here at EveryGuyed are ready to help you dig up that v neck from the back of the closet and put it to good use. And we don’t mean by donating it to charity.

Lighter Clothes First

Seems simple enough right? Start layering off right with your lighter clothes first – t-shirts underneath dress shirts so you can build an outfit. Think of it as laying a foundation.

Unless you live in Antarctica, lighter layers means you can easily take off your bulky knit wear or blazer and be comfortable in a setting where the heat is turned up high.

Staying warm is important in winter but excessive sweating just isn’t flattering on anyone.

What to Put on Top

Just about anything your heart desires can be added when it comes to building layers. Thicker and heavier pieces of clothing are what you’d throw on top of your lighter pieces of clothing.

How about that v neck sweater you were skeptical about on top of that white dress shirt? Or a simple sportcoat on top of that sweater to give your outfit a touch of class.

Try a cardigan for a more casual layering experience with a t-shirt or for a night on the town, mix it up with a patterned dress shirt. The possibilities and combinations are endless when it comes to layering.

Accessorize

Now that you’re a layering pro, don’t be afraid to start adding accessories. Why not add a tie to your v neck and dress shirt combination? Or pair a scarf with your cardigan and t-shirt outfit?

Adding your standard accessories like a hat, gloves, a belt and even the right pair of shoes can take make your outfit truly pop.

Be Comfortable

Truer words have never been spoken when it comes to layering, or indeed any clothing. If you’re not comfortable with what you’re wearing or if you’re concerned you’re going to be too warm, you won’t feel your best.

Look for weather appropriate fabrics – chambray and lightweight cotton during warmer months and cashmere, wool, chunky knits and heavyweight cotton in the winter.

In other words gentlemen, what we’re saying here is lighter materials in the summer and heavier and thicker ones in the winter. Don’t roll your eyes, some of you are only just getting that ‘Aha!’ moment now.

Add Some Color

Don’t be afraid to throw a dash of color into your outfit. However, you also don’t want to overdo it and wear every single shade of blue Crayola has ever produced.

That being said, don’t always reach for black – branch out. Why not try a nice shade of blue with that white dress shirt? Or how about a patterned dress shirt underneath that grey cardigan? Or why not mix up your lackluster outfit with a brightly colored tie?

Summary

  • When starting to layer, always put your lightest clothes on first.
  • Add thicker and heavier pieces on top – sweaters, blazers, cardigans, etc.
  • Accessorize! Ties, belts, hats, and shoes can help to make your outfit that much better.
  • Be comfortable. Lighter materials in the summer like chambray and lightweight cotton and heavier materials in the winter like merino wool, cashmere and knits will keep help to keep you warm.
  • Don’t be afraid of color. You’ve got a whole palette of colors waiting for you at your disposal, however, you don’t want to go overboard or go crazy with patterns.
