Burton Debuts 2014 Olympic U.S. Snowboarding Team Uniforms

Jake Burton Carpenter’s little company has come a long way since founding Burton Snowboards out of a Vermont barn in 1977. What was once a hobby has become a leading-industry manufacturer of snowboards and apparel. How popular and respected have Burton Snowboards become? The company has only provided the outfits for the US Olympic Snowboard team in 2006 and 2010. And, the company is returning for a third consecutive run.

Burton recently unveiled the gear for Team USA, which will be worn during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia from Feb. 7 to 23, 2014. Just as the company did with riders during the games in Torino and Vancouver, Burton received feedback from the athletes on what they would prefer to wear. Burton also was inspired by American heritage – mainly handcrafted patchwork.

The highlight of the Team USA uniforms are the one-of-a-kind red, white and blue quilt jackets. The quilt-pattern jackets were based off of a vintage quilt discovered at an antique fair of all places. The quilt was taken back to Burton’s headquarters in Vermont where it was deconstructed and re-constructed by a veteran Vermont quilt maker in order to get it ready to replicate onto the outerwear fabrics. The end-result was a patriotic vintage quilt and flag print jacket that is bound to turn heads while up in the mountains.

The uniforms also include corduroy pants, gloves, mitts, beanies and cozy wool/silk blend competition pull-over fleeces. And, perhaps best of all for the athletes, Burton worked with the U.S. Army Natick Soldier RD&E Center to develop the all-new DRYRIDE Vaporshell laminate. This technology created a waterproof and breathable fabric that can stand up to any weather condition. Perfect for battling the elements offered by the frigid Russian winter.

We’re really proud that the 2014 uniform builds on Burton’s legacy of creating fun, unconventional designs that stray from the formal, traditional look of most uniforms,” said Greg Dacyshyn, Chief Creative Officer at Burton Snowboards. “The vintage quilt and flag print of the jacket combined with the corduroy pants give the uniform a ‘heirloom hippy’ vibe that lines up with snowboarding’s laid-back culture while paying respect to America’s longstanding creative heritage. It will stand out in Sochi for sure.”

While there isn’t a release date, you can grab these uniforms for yourself in the near feature. Just in case you want to get all ‘Merica’ will tearing up the slopes this winter. Check out the collection below and let us know if you’d be willing to sport that unique quilt and flag print jacket. Honestly, we kinda wish that every member of Team USA would be outfitted with this gear during the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Albert Costill
Just a typical guy that wants an ice-cold PBR with some pizza and wings to go with football on a Sunday. Since venturing into the blogosphere many years ago to discuss his favorite tunes, Al has now moved onto publications by Alpha Brand Media such as AMOG and SoJones to blab about anything and everything else that matters.

What's on your mind?

  1. I can’t understand for the life of me why in the world they would’ve chosen this design. They are horribly ugly and make all of our competitors look like hobos! Not a great way to represent the USA!

  2. I would defiantly buy a set of these snowboarding uniforms for me and my wife for our winter holidays. We live in Guernsey but love traveling around America.

  3. Bring it on, I need that jacket, the full outfit looks way coolio and should be put on sale. Just make sure us Brits can buy it

  4. When and where can I purchase the jacket and accessories? Already have everything picked out that I want. Probably have to save up for the jacket but I can start collecting. lol Gotta have this!!
