As most of us brace ourselves for another round of inclement weather – Arctic blasts, snow – we can at least find some relief in knowing that warmer weather will arrive. Eventually. And, with a more moderate climate comes the time to put away the winter weather gear and bring out the lighter clothing and even beach accessories. Since it doesn’t get any more spring or summer than the Golden State, it only made sense that the most recent lookbook from Original Penguin would be captured in Malibu.
The funny part about the Original Penguin spring/summer 2014 collection is that you wouldn’t have expected it from a brand whose foundation began in a factory in Minnesota.
The tale surrounding Abbot Pederson and his trip to New York City in 1955 is an amusing one. Pederson was a salesman for the Munsingwear undergarment factory in Minneapolis and while on a business trip, had enjoyed one too many drinks. He stumbled onto a street in Manhattan and came across a display of penguins in a taxidermist’s window. Pederson purchased one of the penguins, named him Pete, and took him back to Minnesota.
On the flight home, Pederson knocked off Pete’s head. A stewardess repaired Pete by using a necktie to keep him together. She joked that Pete should be immortalized, like being embroidered on a shirt similar to the one that Pederson was wearing. And, that’s how the iconic Munsingwear golf shirt was born.
The shirt was comfortable, casual and an absolute necessity for golfers who were looking for something that they could wear on the course and afterwards at the 19th hole. Some of the most well-known in America were fans of the shirt. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Arnold Palmer and Clint Eastwood were seen wearing Original Penguin gear. While the brand became a classic, it had a resurgence in 2000 when a new generation noticed the vintage brand. In 2003, Original Penguin was reborn and it remains a fixture in men’s fashion.
To illustrate that point, Original Penguin combined the warm laidback vibes of the West Coast with a line that includes floral patterns, pink button downs and printed board shorts. The outdoor shoot, which was captured by photographer Stephen Busken, blends the pieces with the beach theme to perfection. There was no better location for this campaign than Malibu.
