We’re not sure what meteorology was like during the 17th Century, but we think people were on to something when they first used “Sweet April showers/Do spring May flowers” in a poem back in 1610. Since then, the phrase has become synonymous with the manic weather that most of us experience in April. One of the reasons we have more rain during the fourth month of the year is because of the jet stream. We don’t want to get extremely scientific here, but the jet stream is a band of heavy winds that makes its way northwards in the spring. This allows depressions to bring strong winds and rain in from the Atlantic. So, in a way, there is some truth to the April showers phrase.
Regardless if you’re experiencing more than usual downpours, we could all use a quality rain jacket. Sometimes it may not be the most stylish, but it will certainly protect you from the elements.
