The folks at Cravat nominee Fucking Young do a quick look at their favorite menswear photography over the past year.
Citizen K Russia Spring / Summer 2011 ‘ Pierrot Le Loup’
Shot by Harley Weir, styled by Jerome Andre
Citizen K is yet to conquer editorial perfection. However, Harley Weir’s work was undoubtedly the best in 2010’s fashion photography. It is naive poetry in a whimsical scenery. The glabrous skin of the male models, posing as the if they were the modern rendition of Michelangelo’s immaculate orgy. It was the youth anthem of gay magic. Enough said.
Hercules Magazine Spring / Summer 2010 ‘LA Confidential’
Shot by Doug Inglish, styled by Ben Sturgill
Hercules is the Latin for the Greek demigod Heracles. Hercules is also the name for a Spanish magazine comprising the best photographs of male models. The male, and the nude, are both invigorating themes inherited from the Ancient Greeks, known for the Dionysian passion towards life, where virtuous and magnanimous. This is not the place for fat and ugly, or to anxiously dwell on unresolved issues: be it body objectification or sexual determinism. Hercules is a god of splendor, and as all things splendorous he does do not allow for explanation or criticism. Sweet dreams are made of this.
Man About Town #7 Fall / Winter 2010
Shot by Willy Vanderperre, styled by Oliver Rizzo
L’Officiel Hommes Paries #21 Fall / Winter 2010 ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’
Shot by Milan Vukmirovic, feat. Anthon Welljo
They do call it fashion. But what else is there?
FHM Collections Fall / Winter 2010 ‘Denim Diary’
Shot by Carlotta Manaigo feat. Sebastian Sauve
FHM channels Caravaggio.
Metal Magazine Issue #20 ’74’
Shot by Miguel Villalobos, styled by Graham Tabor
Dandies can be many things, but they’re often obnoxious. We’ve seen tiresome versions of the great Daphne Guinness erupting all over Facebook in what appears to be a middle-age-crisis of Central Saint Martins students, and it’s not pretty. Being a patchwork of all things regal, sponsored by your ascendency cultural inheritances, is something potentially amazing. But if you don’t have the ascendency nor the inheritances, you better just quit it.
If it looks fake, it most probably is. So unless you’re a male model styled by Graham Tabor and photographed by Miguel Vilallobos – Dandy is something you can only achieve gazing through the pages of Metal.
New Wave Men’s Editorial ‘Out of the Shade’
Shot by Duane Nasis, styled by Raphael Hirsch
The poutiness of those lips alone is sufficient reason for this photo to win a place on the 2010 Top 10. But, there is something perhaps less obvious and very reminiscent of Wolfgang Tillman’s work that had us in tears of joy. Composition.
Vogue Hommes Japan Issue #4 ‘The Nomad of the Golden Sand’
Shot by Mariano Vivanco
Nothing makes sense. Massai tribal-style ornaments rest on top of a Californian surfer’s nude torso, covered with excess layers of spay tan. Judging by the description, one might think I was describing a National Geographic archive photo, but no: its just Vogue– and how do we prove it? The human depicted above flaunts a crystalized forehead. Idiosyncrasy rules.
W Magazine Octoboer 2010 ‘His is Hers’
Shot by Craig McDean, styled by Alex White
W magazine offered a mature version of the slightly depressed black-and-white ensemble that suffocated the scene since the emergence of Slimane fashions. He moved on, its time we do too. No more studded leather jackets. No more skinny-suburban-hipster looks. No more spandex misery pants sponsoring the lives of demi-teenagers whom after everyone in town moved on, still listen to the same hardcore tunes, in the same miserable flat, with the same raged friends who in spite of most solemnly swearing to be mavericks, still gather for their BDSM play-dates.
I get it: you don’t want to be part of the crowd, but you’re also scared to walk alone. No problem: quit the 1995 satanic shenanigan and embrace a Dies Weibe Band version of evil. A literary one. We might join you then.
Fiasco November 2010 Sex Issue ‘Sweet’
Shot by Lope Navo
Instead of denying all the driving forces of fashion (sensibility, and moreover, the motion towards sensible pleasure), Fiasco magazine did exactly what magazines are supposed to do: throw a celebratory party, framing the birthday cake into a composition probably yummier than the cake itself.
