How To Organize Your Closet

If you have everything piled into your closet but clothes, and you’re doing everything you possibly can to never have to open that closet again, then it might be time for you to face the cold hard reality, that you might need to organize your closet.

But before you try and tackle the daunting task of going through the mounds of clothes, accessories and other foreign objects you have stashed in there, EveryGuyed is here to help you figure out where to start. From clothes organizers to additional storage space, we’ll help you decide what you’ll need in order to organize that thing you call a closet.

Throw It Out

The first step in organizing your closet is getting rid of what you don’t need. So go on that trip down memory lane but remember, if you don’t wear it , and can honestly never conceive of wearing it, throw it out.

As painful as it is to let go of that tartan kilt, remember in the long run that you’re also making room for a better wardrobe. Putting seasonal items into storage will also help create extra room in your closet.

Most charities will also come straight to your door to pick up your unwanted clothing – saving you time in your busy schedule.

Keep Similar Items Together

Digging around your closet wastes time and energy, especially when you’re not in the mood to tear your closet apart. Hanging your similar items together (like dress shirts with dress shirts, sportcoats with blazers) will keep you from wasting time and save your sanity.

Hanging like garments together will also help you determine what you want to wear instead of what color you want to wear. For example, you’ll be more likely to lean towards a sweater than frantically trying to match it with something.

Invest in Closet Organizers

So what are you supposed to do with things you just can’t hang up? Invest in extra closet space, with things like shelves, shoe organizers or hanger organizers to free up space in your closet.

Fold thicker sweaters and delicate shirts, place them on shelves and if you have multiple pairs of pants, invest in multi-tiered hangers to help separate your trousers. You’ll find that you have easier access to the items of clothes you wear more often, and clothes you didn’t will fall to the back of the herd.

Make Accessories Visible

Though you may have a drawer full of ties and cufflinks, it may not the best idea – you’re less inclined to wear those accessories because they’re tucked away. (Editor’s note: Neckties also crease when laid flat! See the EveryGuyed Guide to Tie Care)

Consider investing in a tie rack to show off your collection of ties and belts. Cufflinks and watches can be kept in a small jewellery box with watches and collar stays. It’ll inspire you to dress up more and to rotate through all your ties instead of just sticking to the one.

Summary

Be realistic, be smart, and most of all, be patient as you work your way through your closet.

  • Throw out clothes and items you don’t wear anymore – you’ll have more room for items you do wear and items you want to purchase in the future.
  • Keep similar items together – sweaters with sweaters and dress shirts with dress shirts, that way you’ll save time in deciding what to wear.
  • Investing in items like shelves, shoe organizers and multi-tiered hangers will help you to free up space and separate items.
  • Make accessories visible so that you’re more likely to include them in your every day wardrobe.

What's on your mind?

    • Toss them. They do your clothes no favors. Ditto for wire hangers. If you’re particularly worried about your suits, pick up proper garment bags.

      Hope that helped, Abhay.

      Cheers,
      Xiao
