Unless you’re a member of the bearded community, then you’re well aware that shaving isn’t cheap. Between the razor handle, blades, creams and lotions, your daily ritual can quickly add up. And, the biggest culprit on your wallet? Blades.

While there are ways to avoid giving companies like Gillette or  Schick your hard earned cash, such as switching over to safety razors or joining Dollar Shave Club or Harry’s, there are still plenty of us out there who rely on the disposable razor. While not the most effective, it does manage to get the job done when in a pinch. And, sometimes it’s just difficult to change old habits.

Because of the outrageous price of disposable cartridges, we’re decided to put together five options that can extend the life of you blade. Even if you made the move to a double-edge or straight razor, some of these options may even work out for you.

5. The Blue Jean Sharpening Method

This method has been circulating online for some time now. And, it’s probably even one of the more popular tricks that men have been using to sharpen their disposable blades.

How to Do It:

Just stoke the razor along the entire length of a leg on a pair of denim blue jeans. It’s suggested that you do around 10 to 20 strokes and then switch directions. Since the threads of the jeans run in a diagonal, switching directions will create a balanced approach to tuning the blade’s edge.

Does It Work?

This method will not exactly sharpen the blades, you can’t sharpen a tool against something that is softer, it will re-align the tiny metal indentations. The blades will now feel “sharper” because it’s better aligned.

4. The Forearm Sharpening Method

A wise men figured that if barbers used to sharpen their blades on a leather strap, why wouldn’t running a blade against something resembling leather work?

How to Do It:

Simply run the razor along your forearm from your elbow to your wrist making sure that the sharp part is facing opposite to the direction you are moving the blade, aka backwards. Do about 10 to 20 strokes and switch directions.

Does It Work?

As with the jean technique, this won’t “sharpen” the blades. However, it will help remove the imperfections from the face of the blade.

3. Strop With Razor Renew

Men used to sharpen their blades by “stropping” the blades on a leather strap. So, why can’t men strop their disposable razor blades? That’s the question that Razor Renew sough to answer.

How to Do It:

Hang the strop up and then run the blade along the suede side several times. To polish the blades, run along the smooth side.

Does It Work?

Stropping is a tried and trusted method of sharpening and maintaining blades. On top of restoring the razor blades, you can use Razor Renew for any item that requires sharpening, like knives, scissors or any other sort of blade. Reviews seem favorable for this modern take on an iconic technique. However, some people have argued that you can save the $25 and use a leather belt.

2. Clean With RazorPit

The makers of RazorPit applied a scientific approach when dealing with the problem of restoring dull blades. It was no surprise that they discovered that after using a razor blade it became full of debris, which in turn, caused the blades to dull. After tests with different material, it was found that a type of silicon known as thermo-plastic elastomer was effective in cleaning and restoring the blades.

How to Do It:

One you’re done shaving, lubricate the RazorPit with a thin layer of shaving product. Place the razor blade onto the surface of RazorPit. Apply light pressure and push the razor forward along the entire surface. Repeat 4–5 times after every shave. Also make sure to rinse the razor and RazorPit with warm water.

Does It Work?

Since 2008, RazorPit has sold over 400,000 units. Either this works, or men have fallen for this gimmick – which doesn’t seem to be the case. RazorPit applies common sense to the problem with disposable razors. They get dirty. And, this little gadget will clean it up. Even Esquire is high on RazorPit. So we think this $35 product is a worthy investment.

1. Keep The Blades Clean and Dry

The most practical, and cost-effective, way to extend the life of your disposable razor is to keep it clean and moisture-free.

How to Do It:

Employ the basics of a quality shave: warm face to loosen hairs and apply cream (a brush is suggested. As you shave, continue to rinse the razor thoroughly since this will remove stubble and cream. After shaving is complete, rinse the razor, blot dry with a towel and dip into a cup of alcohol. This will purge the remaining moisture and sterilize the blades. When storing your razor, make certain it is not directly near a location where it can get wet, since you need to avoid moisture. Finally, keep the razor in an upright position.

Does It Work?

Absolutely. Debris and moisture are the main reasons why blades will dull, even after being used a couple of times. Cleaning and keeping the blade dry will definitely extend its usage.

Getting the most out of you disposable razor doesn’t make you cheap. It makes you wiser. Besides saving money, trying to restore the blades will offer a smoother and better shave – one that gets closer and avoids nicks and irritation.

We’ve all been there: you’re planning a vacation – excited to be getting away – and then you start searching for a hotel to stay in. That can’t be the price, right? No minibar?! The revelation came one day when I found an obscenely cheap flight out to San Francisco, one of my favorite cities. I was ready to cash in on this deal when I started looking at hotel rooms. There was next to nothing that wouldn’t completely blow the savings from my flight, and what was were in neighborhoods that I’m willing to walk through (during daylight hours), but not sleep in. So on a whim I checked out AirBNB, a site where homeowners post their own homes/apts/etc and income properties available for rent to travelers like myself. I was able to score a beautiful one bedroom in the Mission district with bay views for less than a cramped, anonymous hotel room would have cost. And with my own kitchen and all the amenities of home, I saved even more money through being able to cook for myself when I felt like it. It was an epiphany.

Though once the provenance of the more adventurous traveler, sites like AirBNB and VRBO have gone mainstream, with hundreds of thousands of listings in nearly every conceivable country. Places range from palatial (seriously, homes the size of hotels) in Montana and Miami to a quaint vintage Airstream trailer in urban Austin. The homeowners that post provide a huge array of information about the spaces and about themselves, so you can feel confident in forking over your hard-earned dollars in the exchange. On top of this, many homeowners take a huge amount of pride in their rentals, so it’s not uncommon to find a six-pack of local brew waiting in the fridge or a list of great local hotspots from actual(!) locals. Users post lengthy and informative reviews and any less-than-stellar places are either clearly marked or taken off the site entirely by administrators.

Dreaming of renting an ‘authentic’ hillside home in the working class neighborhoods of Mexico City? Think again. Hotels in more dangerous regions offer a much higher element of protection for travelers. Always Negotiate:

Unlike a hotel, this market lives for negotiation. Most people renting their places would rather take $800 for a week than nothing at all, or meet you in the middle when it comes to check-in or check-out times. Just don’t be a bully about it.

Bring a buddy or 12:

The best deals to be had on these sites are on large places in unique locations that are much harder to rent out economically. Do some research ahead of time on a place and a house and then blow your friends away when you pitch it to them with a price that’s lower per-person than an airport Marriott.

All in all, it’s a renters market out there. You no longer have to suffer through half-cleaned rooms or a lack of amenities (or amenities that nickel-and-dime you to death). Before its official launch at H&M stores worldwide on November 14th, we take a look at the full men’s offering from the retail giants collaboration with designer Isabel Marant (her first venture into menswear, ever). The lineup includes Marant’s signature bohemian-chic fringed knits as well as a more urban take on a leather pant and finished with a wide variety of lose, modern-cut T-shirts. Accessories are also included, like scarves and belts that have a more wallet-friendly starting price of around $35. The most expensive pieces are the leather pants which retail for $350, while outerwear should land between $200 to $300 mark. Granted, Marant’s designs aren’t suited to most guys, while others may cringe at the higher than typical cost for an H&M product, but no doubt there will be those that line up on November 14th. Shaving. It’s a necessary evil. Even worse is the fact that you have to pay for this daily tedious and unwanted task. Of course, you could avoid shaving and attempt your best Zach Galifianakis, but that probably won’t take you all that far. The jury is still out on whether or not these razors do as good a job, but some guys claim that they do. What’s the worse that can happen? Maybe not as a close of a shave or some skin irritation? Or, maybe you’ll discover that name brands are running a scamming. It’s worth a try.

4. Join Dollar Shave Club

You’ve probably heard of the startup Dollar Shave Club either because of its hilarious viral video or remarkable prices. If not, the concept is simple. You pay a monthly fee, as little as $1 per month plus shipping, and then razors are shipped right to your house. Not only are you saving some cash, you’re also avoiding an extra trip to the store.

3. Keep Your Razor Dry and Clean

After you shave, your razor is probably wet. Why’s this a bad thing? This will cause your razor to rust and dull more quickly than when it’s dry. To slow down this process, dry the razor off after use by blotting it on a towel or even using a blow-dryer. Also, make sure that your razor is clean. Stuff like hair and shaving cream/gel will also shorten the life of your blade. Make sure to clean your blades after use by scrubbing it with something like a toothbrush. These tricks will help make your razor blades last longer.

2. Sharpen Your Razor

Did you know that you can sharpen your disposable razor? Well, you totally can. There’s a couple of MacGyver-like ways to complete this task, such as pushing the razor along denim in the reverse direction that you shave or even along your forearm. You may have to make an initial investment, but in the long run, you’ll save a ton of cash on shaving. This old-fashioned technique may be a little more time consuming, but it’s a very cost effective method after the initial cost of supplies. And, you’ll get a pretty clean shave as well.
